BMW unveils roadster version of i8 plug-in sports hybrid

Ebmwx-wide-community
BMW introduced in Beijing an open-top Spyder concept version of the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car coming in 2014.

The hybrid vehicle, constructed with extensive use of carbon fiber for lighter weight, has an electric motor, a three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine, a lithium-ion battery and computer controls all developed by BMW.

The electric motor in the front and the gas engine in the rear can operate independently, or in tandem for maximum power at launch, as well as a form of all-wheel drive when needed.

Notes BMW, the "full torque of the electric motor is available from a standing start, and the acceleration unfolds continuously in thoroughbred electric vehicles until the top speed is attained."
